This popular tour pairs the heartwarming Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage with the awe-inspiring Sigiriya Rock Fortress, giving you the perfect balance of wildlife encounters and ancient history. The climb to the summit is an adventure through ancient frescoes, lion’s paws, and mirror walls, culminating in breathtaking panoramic views.

Boulder Gardens (15 min): Navigate through massive boulders. Monks lived in these rock caves centuries ago.
The Frescoes (15 min): Climb the spiral staircase to see the famous Sigiriya frescoes beautiful paintings of celestial maidens from 1,500 years ago. Only 18 remain of the original 500, but they’re remarkably well-preserved.

Lion’s Paws Platform (10 min): Reach the dramatic gateway with giant lion paws. Originally, a massive lion figure marked the entrance – the stairway led through the lion’s mouth!
Final Ascent (30 min): Steel stairs lead to the summit. Take your time and rest as needed.
The Summit:

Conservation Note:
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has faced criticism in recent years regarding animal welfare. We work with the most ethical operators and advocate for proper elephant care. The orphanage does provide sanctuary for orphaned elephants, but we encourage visitors to observe responsibly and support conservation efforts.
Photo Tips: Morning light at Pinnawala is excellent for photography. Elephants are most active during bath time – continuous shooting mode helps catch action. At Sigiriya, afternoon light creates dramatic shadows on the rock face. Wide-angle lens useful for summit views. Bring zoom lens for elephant close-ups.
